People driving to Banbury for their Christmas shopping will find it easier thanks to a trio of new parking offers.
They are: a weekend shoppers’ rate at Banbury railway station; a park and ride scheme operating between Bodicote and the town centre; and a new offer for Old Town retail workers, set to free up more town centre spaces. Cherwell District Council has worked with the Banbury Business
Improvement District (BID), Chiltern Railways, Stagecoach and Banbury and Bicester College to agree the offers.
Graeme Kane, Cherwell’s chief operating officer, said: “It’s important that we support local shops and shoppers as much as possible during the run-up to Christmas. In order to support our local town centre, we wanted to make sure there was plenty of opportunity to visit and shop in Banbury during the Christmas period. The town centre car parks are often busy at the weekends and these new measures will free up hundreds of spaces.”
Jo Holland, Banbury BID manager, said: “These three parking schemes will provide greater parking options for visitors and staff, which will be to the benefit of the town as a whole. Working with Cherwell District Council has been crucial to achieve these results.”
Banbury BID and Cherwell have developed the railway station agreement with Chiltern Railways. Customers will be able to park there for up to three hours for £2.50 at weekends paying through the RingGo app.
The Bodicote Park and Ride scheme is being delivered in partnership with Stagecoach, who will be offering Saturday passengers a return ticket to Banbury for £2.50. Parking will be free at the council offices at Bodicote House.
The retail workers’ offer will work on a permit system, offering free parking a short walk away from Old Town shops. It is hoped that this will free up space at other town centre park parks.
All three schemes will be operating on a trial basis from Saturday 30 November up until Christmas and could continue into the new year if they are well received.
The council offices are at Bodicote House, Bodicote, OX16 3AA. For an overview of council-run car parks, visit: www.cherwell.gov.uk/parking
