Exciting commercial opportunities at Castle Quay
In June 2022 The Light opened a 55,000 square foot entertainment space over three floors, including a 7-screen cinema, 10-lane bowling alley, Adventure Climb arena, arcade, karaoke room, interactive darts, mini-golf, American Pool and Diner. The Light is a true reflection of the Council’s ambition to revive the canal-side and will anchor Waterfront’s leisure offer. The Waterfront also features restaurants including PizzaExpress and Nando’s. PizzaExpress opened in late June 2022 and Nando’s to opened mid-October; all of which create an amazing new leisure destination in Banbury. Increased parking including EV parking space capacity (5%), and improved access have also been provided as part of the development including a new pedestrian bridge over the Oxford Canal.
The Council has also breathed new life into the centre’s former BHS store, investing in the creation of a unique food, retail and leisure destination called Lock29 that brings the community to the canal-side as well as increasing footfall to the town from visitors from all over the region. Global street food menus are delivered by the very best local traders sourcing ingredients as close to Banbury as possible. There is also a dedicated event and flexible cinema space where workshops, events, and activities for the community-run throughout the year. Please visit Lock29.co.uk for further information.
In August 2021 Premier Inn opened at Castle Quay Waterfront. This modern hotel has 117 rooms, including double, twin, family, and accessible rooms, as well as 20 enhanced Premier Plus bedrooms, plus a canal side Thyme Bar & Grill restaurant. The hotel fills a huge gap in the local market and visitor numbers have remained high since opening.
These interconnected canal-side spaces connect seamlessly, creating a canal-side destination where retail, restaurants, hospitality and leisure meet, closely intertwined with parking for visitors to the town centre.
Castle Quay is home to over 60 national and regional/independent retailers, including New Look, Waterstones, JD Sports, Boots and Lock29 which hosts new diverse and exciting food and drink artisans plus a casual pop-up cinema for secret cinema clubs and educational activities. The centre offers 444,000 sq ft of retail space with parking.
Castle Quay Shopping Centre and Castle Quay Waterfront are both owned by Cherwell District Council. The Council has invested heavily in the town centre, catering for a catchment area of nearly 390,000 residents.
There remain exciting opportunities to take space within Castle Quay Waterfront and the shopping centre is also keen to explore opportunities with independent brands to complement its line-up of great businesses.

Don’t just take our word for it.
‘Trading in Castle Quay has been fantastic for us as a new independent local business. The higher footfall here has given us exposure to a wider audience than we could have expected elsewhere in the town, and, alongside the support of the team here, CQ has really given us an opportunity to establish ourselves and to grow. Banbury is a busy market town which has long attracted shoppers from a good distance away and the introduction of a number of new independents, as well as the development of Lock 29 and the canal-side project, offer reassurance that this trend will continue in the long term.’
Dan Ludlow, Nothing But Footprints
‘I would encourage any business to trade in Castle Quay or Lock29. I was a bit nervous about taking the chance but it was the best decision I have made and it’s only going to get better and better. I have been trading in and around Castle Quay for over 20 years and I enjoy my job .You could even say I’m living the dream!’
